We're a little short on genuine relief, but have a little comic relief.

This is awful and cruel, and literally government forced labour. But also, I think, appropriate.

Indonesians are saying it happened to pretty much just those guys in the photo op and qanon is otherwise being allowed to run rampant through the lockdown attempts.

I'm just gonna assume that Greg Abbott is a complete fuckface waste of life without even looking up who he is

In other, gentler times I would not be so quick to judge but I have just given up

EDIT: oh the governor of Texas, cool

but seriously at this point I just assume the people on the other side of the COVID debate are all complete fucking psychopaths or massively entitled ignorant shitlords or both

I still can't really process there being a debate at all, let alone an entrenched pro-disease side. A few short years ago it seemed so much like lunacy was fading and there was a mirage of some kind of worthwhile future on the horizon. I distinctly remember being jealous of our grandkids but now thinking about them inspires only dull, sick terror.

Leftist YouTuber Renegade Cut has a video titled Misinformation for Fun and Profit which posits a theory to explain things like COVID denial.

Essentially, wealthy capitalists fund politicians and media to produce propaganda in order to convince the working class to vote and behave against their own interests. The average person isn't an idiot, they're just being constantly lied to, and are rationally basing their beliefs on information they are unaware is false.

Coronavirus deniers aren't insane, they're just being lied to by capitalists who want the economy to keep going so they can make more money and protect their existing investments. The same system has, for decades, convinced Americans that working hard for a corporation is virtuous, that socialism is a Soviet plot, and that your job and wages are being stolen by immigrants and not your corporate overlords.

That's about where my head was pre-Trump.

I've moved on to "No, they really are just a bunch of fucking bigots, and they'll say or do anything that advances bigotry."

I suppose the two positions aren't mutually exclusive -- certainly the ruling class pushes bigotry as a useful way to keep us fighting amongst ourselves so we don't unite against them -- but I'm increasingly of the opinion that the explanation for conservatism is dead-nuts simple and it really is just that they hate people who are different and everything else is window-dressing.

You are correct in that they're not mutually exclusive, but I feel like greed is really undersold as a root cause of what's going on specifically in America.

Fear and anger generate the highest returns on investment, are relatively easy to trigger, and provide very quick profits. On the other hand they're costly (not always in money) emotions to respond to, often complicated to soothe, and only show returns on investment over a much longer period.

There's bigots and morons everywhere, but things like QAnon or Trump-as-president (not in his evil, but in his gross incompetence) are a feature of truly warped societies. The pathological sociopathy that American society (present company etc.) has preached as a global virtue for literally centuries at this point is killing us all.

For the record, I'm very glad that my more dire predictions in the early months (1 million or more US) don't -seem- to be coming to pass either.

I understand that death cults have always existed, that the "powers that be" have always worked to break people and drive them to despair, infighting and kicking downward, but it's never felt ascendant like this before. I've not watched gentle and loving friends spiral into the violent insanity of qanon or read posts like this, recognised it all and had no hopeful response to offer:
u/petal_chatoyance wrote:I have a family member like that. She used to be smart. She used to be scientific - she is technically trained, she is a radio engineer - but now... now she has literally told me that Covid is a hoax propagated by the evil Democrats. Did I mention she was queer and trans both? Or that her intelligence is in the highest percentile? She wasn't like this before the current administration.

I cannot understand what happened to her. I cannot comprehend what would turn a previously rational, progressive, science-aligned person into a soul who thinks vast conspiracies are stealing basic freedoms, that all scientists and doctors (ALL of them!) are part of a vast scam to steal those freedoms... or even that those so-called freedoms are even important compared to not dying of an incurable disease.

I am at a loss. I care about this person, but... she has gone straight-up insane about this stuff.

I fear we've reached a critical mass and some kind of horrible social phase change is underway. That far future history might record this decade as "The end of the first Age of Science".

Dragging this one back out has been quite fashionable the last little while.

Alexis came home feeling sick yesterday. Fever, sore throat, chills. She got tested today, but in the meantime we've banished the grandparents upstairs. And since the kids won't leave mom, that means they're effectively exposed too. Which I guess also means I need to isolate myself in my own home.

A quarantine within a quarantine. I wouldn't recommend it. I have no idea how I'm going to work or get Kiddo 01 to do his homework...

Stay as safe as possible, put yeah, it's very tough to keep from getting it if your pod does. Roughly as hard as the flu, since the ROI is basically the same, but obviously COVID is 10-20 times more lethal and has possible long term effects.

If it ever seems like it's a pain in the ass not seeing your wife or kids, remember those stats. Yes, it might be hard on your kids to not see their father for a few weeks while you quarantine. It'll be harder on them if they infect you with COVID and you die.

I don't mean to be mean or sound cruel here. But we need to be frank and remember what the stakes are.

In any case, I hope Lexi is okay. Stay strong.

Still waiting on results, but so far only fascinating new migraine symptoms.

I guess one good thing to come out of this is it might get me out of an all-hands in-person meeting at work. I just yesterday found out it's going to be held on the production floor, inside, and with sub-optimal distancing. But hey! At least lunch will be served!

Guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering the CEO is a Trump supporter. And even from my less toxic boss, there's always rosy talk about how soon things will go back to normal.

Okay, getting upset now. Time to go do things and maybe ask Lexi for more Latest Kate drawings.

ETA: also masking up in your own home sucks. My ears hurt bad, yo
