Popehat thread/Nitter mirror

Basically, the way he sees it: this is a big fucking deal, it would have been approved at the highest levels, and they wouldn't have approved it if they weren't seriously preparing to indict. We don't know the specifics yet, but the NYT is reporting that it's related to Trump taking classified documents with him when he left the White House; Ken doesn't think that's sufficient explanation for this happening now, and suspects there's more to the story than that.

If they can nail him for this within two years Trump is done with his federal government office holding efforts in all forms. He and the Republicans won't even be able to try some insane legal dancing to work around it. Trump's only option to get power back would be to attempt a coup again.

18 U.S. Code § 2071 - Concealment, removal, or mutilation generally

(a) Whoever willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to do so, or, with intent to do so takes and carries away any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited with any clerk or officer of any court of the United States, or in any public office, or with any judicial or public officer of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

(b) Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States. As used in this subsection, the term “office” does not include the office held by any person as a retired officer of the Armed Forces of the United States.

That he's being investigated for federal crimes is all I need to know that Trump isn't a real billionaire.

Not the only way. I could see the Supreme Court ruling that this is an unconstitutional restriction on eligibility to serve as president.

Regardless, I think federal charges, let alone conviction, will make it extremely difficult for him to win another election, even with all the dirty tricks state legislatures are pulling to try to rig the outcome.

Couple things of note.

- Trump or his lawyers will have a copy of the warrant. If it were something harmless or at least something he could claim was being blown out of proportion (the most common take on this is they're trying to "get" him for not returning classified documents... which he actually did return in January!), he could release the warrant. That the warrant has not been released implies that the public knowing the contents of it would be damaging to Trump somehow.

- The RW song & dance right now is "The FBI was planting evidence!", which also tells me we can expect something fun.

- Everyone's favourite "Let's see ole Donny Trump wriggle out of this one! Ah, well, nevertheless." seems to have shifted to "Here's why being in this jam is actually great news for Trump's re-election chances."

- Wide speculation that the real crime involved is selling state secrets to foreign powers. Which, geez, man, if you can't trust the president whose reptilian son-in-law accepted the largest cash bribe in US history, who can you trust?

Sooooooooo many RW takes repeating this near-verbatim right now:

Image

With the correct and widespread response being “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”

Also getting Andrew Yang's totally-separate-third-party spouting weird right wing talking points about how this will put trump in the white house because it's soooooo extreme, then claiming "no no, i hate trump too, i'm just asking questions."

Oh yeah, Andrew Yang is just going full bananas right now. Best comment I saw was "So his empty cranial cavity really is just occupied by a gerbil that's swatting at the gnawed stubs of the remaining loose wires."

And getting more of that sweet, sweet GOP super-pac money that's funding Forward can buy more gerbil food.

Primary source on this is Fox News so I'm not going to link to it, but it looks like they're going after Congressman Scott Perry too:

I guess "this is just like all those times the FBI didn't raid his house" sort of resembles reasoning.

It's pattern recognition, at least.

I don't know everything but I do know that Alex Jones's entire text message history was turned over to the Jan 6 committee and less than 24 hours later the feds were busting into Donald Trump's safe.

So that's wild.

I would be a little surprised if all the necessary due diligence to raid a former president happened within the time frame since Alex Jones's texts were turned over. The more likely hypothesis IMO, even though Alex Jones hiring incompetent lawyers sinking the criminal enterprise that is the Republican party would be amusing, is that they flipped Mark Meadows (possibly with the threat of "we're about to get Alex Jones's texts, last chance to get any credit for cooperating before we have other ways to unravel this".)
