Baked Alaska's been arrested.

I don't use this word often but rest assured that this is one of those times I am using it in the purest possible way with the purest possible motivation for doing so

So, this should go without saying, but, uh

Anyone who lives in the US? Stay the fuck away from any government building for the next couple of days. I mean -any- government building. State, Federal, even Local. Who the fuck knows what these assholes may try.

Hell, I wouldn't even say it was a bad idea for non-americans to do the same.

I've been heartened by the fact that the events planned for the 16th-now have failed to materialize, but you're absolutely right that it's still best to be cautious.

I mean, I'm contracting through the FDA at the moment, and we got an email essentially "Stay home, and if you can't, you should pretend like you don't work for the government until you get in the building, and once you're in the building, make sure everyone can see your badge, then go to work in a room with no windows and a locking door."
They also said that everyone is forbidden from watching the inauguration, so ?

My sister's directly employed by the government, but they traditionally get inauguration day off since it's impossible to get anywhere or do anything in DC on a normal day.

Yeah, initially we were told it was a day off, but then when people realized we were contractors...

Pentagon Accelerates Efforts to Root Out Far-Right Extremism in the Ranks

Part of this is, of course, that there's always been a strong white supremacist component in the military. But another part of it is, remember during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars when the military was so hard-up for troops that it relaxed its standards on things like criminal records?

I can't say as I trust the DoD to clean house. But at least somebody seems to be making the effort.

CNN: Trump talked out of pardoning kids and Republican lawmakers

Huddled for a lengthy meeting with his legal advisers, Trump was warned the pardons he once hoped to bestow upon his family and even himself would place him in a legally perilous position, convey the appearance of guilt and potentially make him more vulnerable to reprisals.

So, too, was Trump warned that pardons for Republican lawmakers who had sought them for their role in the Capitol insurrection would anger the very Senate Republicans who will determine his fate in an upcoming impeachment trial.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone and another attorney who represented Trump in his first impeachment trial, Eric Herschmann, offered the grave warnings as Trump, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner listened. Other lawyers joined by telephone. They all told Trump he should not pardon himself, his family or any GOP lawmakers in a prospective manner unless he was prepared to list specific crimes.

[...]

Trump could still change his mind, and retains his sweeping clemency powers until noon on Wednesday. The President continues to bring up pardons that aides one thought were off the table, including for former strategist Steve Bannon, leading to general uncertainty about whether Trump will continue adhering to his lawyers' advice.

So really, who the fuck knows, but we'll find out sometime in the next 20 hours.

Who knows, he might still do it. He basically never listens to anyone's advice for very long, and he's still got ~19 hours left.

Some other sources have also noted that he doesn't actually have to publicize any pardons, he can just document them privately (so long as there's evidence he made them before he left office), and nobody even has to hear about them until/unless there's a relevant criminal proceeding. Reagan issued pardons that didn't become public until 3 weeks after he left office.

However, I don't really think of Trump as the kind of guy who can keep a secret for 3 weeks.

Time: President Trump Pardons Steve Bannon, Lil Wayne and Convicted Politicians in Final Hours in Office

No pardons for his family, his businesses, or himself, at least as far as anyone's reporting at this point.

Worth noting: Apparently there's a concept that pardons don't have to be publicized until the person has been charged with the crimes they've been pardoned for, there just has to be proof that the secret pardon was issued while that person was president.

Yes. I didn't mention that in my post because I already mentioned it in the one directly above it.

And Biden's been sworn in. Technically it's still 11:50, but I think we can say the Trump Administration is finally over.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the Trumps, let alone the racism and fascism they represent. Christ knows that getting Trump out of office doesn't fix all the problems we have. But it's an important step. Can't blame anybody for breathing a sigh of relief in this moment.
