Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
Metal Warriors is my favorite of this round and is one of the first games I remember as a multiplayer experience. I can still throw down in it on command.
I'm not sure if Terranigma is my favorite of the trilogy, but it's definitely the one I spent the most time with. I can't say anything about it that would come close to François though.

Well since I just talked up IoG earlier I suppose my hands are tied. Lufia 2, IoG.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
I still treasure that somewhat decaying, oversized tee.

illusion of gaia is beating lufia 2

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
succinct summary of this round: fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
This feels like it ought to be a later round for how good these four games are. As much as I hate to make Friday's life even more of a lie, Illusion of Gaia is too charming, weird, and full of nostalgia for me to be anything but a lock for this round. I never played Lufia 2 when it was contemporary, despite absolutely loving the far inferior first game, and going back to it later it had just been a little too long for me to really dive into it. I recognize it as absolutely top tier quality, but it doesn't have the same impact on my heart as that stupid pig jumping into the fire. Likewise, Contra 3 is one of the earlier games on the system and yet somehow one of the absolute best, but in the end, put up against the good times I had with the much later Super Star, it just can't quite hang. Kirby SS just has too much variety, detail, and charm crammed into one package.
Illusion of Gaia and Kirby.

I was going to do a BoF2 replay or try to ever finish 3,but now I am just ignoring them for Lufia!
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
Voting for Kirby because Kirby and Lufia 2 because there's some sweet remixes on OCRemix.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
Selan's Magical Wife status is more than enough reason to vote Lufia
I mean come on there are two types of games
1. games that do not have Dekar in them

The Super Star wars games were fucking garbage, I have no idea how they're even on the list.

This. The Super Star Wars games have a strange nostalgia field around them that is made entirely of pure Star Warsium. They're terrible games on pretty much every metric, but they also have Star Wars music, so people love them. An easy knockout this round. Mario Paint is a little harder to callously destroy, because Nintendo does with Mario Paint something they've always done to their detriment and their success. Taking something that already works just fine and introducing a strange proprietary, game-y spin on the thing wasn't Nintendo's only trick in the book back when Mario Paint was released, and it's a pretty fascinating relic of its time that has managed to endure to today in the same way that the Game Boy Camera has thanks to its unique properties (namely the music generator). Plus, getting those sprite sheets from Nintendo Power was great.
That said, at the end of the day, a paint program is a paint program, and Earthbound is rightfully one of the most beloved cult classics in video game history and Super Mario RPG plays well enough and has enough heart and charm to transcend its poorly aged graphics and terrible additions to Mario canon that were never actually added to Mario canon. Geno and Smithy can't bring down the joy of getting a power star and stomping your way through the map for mad XPs.

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
I'm giving one vote to Actraiser just because it doesn't deserve to be at 0 votes with Gradius III.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
Honestly, Star Fox and Gradius III are pretty equal as shooters, they're just very different types of shooters. Both deal with unreasonable amounts of jank that you can have a great time with regardless. But Star Fox has charm and novelty on its side, whereas Gradius III just has that awesome bubble slowdown second stage. I'd argue Actraiser's side scrolling portion brings it down just under Star Fox, despite how fun and cool the god portions of Actraiser are. It's close between those two, but Star Fox is the more consistently fun game.
A Link to the Past is A Link to the Past.

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
If I had one and only one vote to cast for the entire competition I would have to be for StarFox, the game that made me buy a console for the first time in my life.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro64)
I will admit that Actraiser is the weaker game and there is no need for boss strategy because you can just meteor meteor meteor and I should probably vote for Star Fox, but I'm still voting for Actraiser. And, well, LttP.

ActRaiser is truly unique. I don't think there's ever been another game quite like it (not even its own sequel). And it's fun, which is arguably also important. Also, Yuzo Koshiro.
Gradius III doomed the entire shoot'em-up genre on the SNES because it was the first one there, and everyone saw the crippling slowdown and went, "Wow, I guess this system can't handle shmups." Long story short, we never got a Super Aleste 2.
