Wow, did Suikoden and Silent Hill just lose in the first round?

Aaaanyway I'm gonna go play Klonoa now so I know whether or not I should vote for it this round.

Oh right, I voted for Suikoden, Silent Hill, and Mega Man X4. Kind of surprised to see Silent Hill knocked out this early, but 2 is the superior product all around anyhow in that series and the same can be said for Suikoden.

For this one: oof.

Klonoa definitely. Metal Gear Solid definitely. Parappa versus DDR is a harder one. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver I never played. I've gotten some of its finer points through cultural osmosis, but after the first game was nothing more than a darknedgy (but somewhat novel) Zelda clone I never really dived back into the series. Breath of Fire is likewise a series I never followed after the first game, so, sorry BoF4, no vote from me for you.

Parappa I don't have a lot of personal nostalgia for as the one time I owned the game the disc was scratched enough to be rendered basically unplayable, so I had to return it, but I find the entire character and series charming as all get out. Playing it at a friend's house however, the gameplay never grabbed me that much. DDR was a full blown late high-school / early college obsession spurned on by said college having a machine right there for the using between classes. It never much translated to the PSX experience for me though. I actually ordered one of those giant metal replica dance pads at one point only to have it never end up getting out of shipping hell to arrive at my house, otherwise I might have ended up continuing down that rabbit hole. But thanks to playlist editing, a dislike for the thin plastic mats commonly used, and overall arcade experience fondness, DDR loses out over Parappa. I like DDR more personally, but Parappa is way more Playstation.

As an aside if you didn't get Klonoa for under a buck during the PSN flash sale, you dun goofed. But it's still there waiting to take your six dollars.

If I had to sum up why I've lost a lot of interest in vidyas as a whole other than just age, it's that it's basically impossible to see a major dev deploy their resources and QA to make a game like PaRappa anymore.

Otherwise, MGS and Klonoa. Part of me wanted to vote for BoF4 just because it represented the steady edging towards Dragon Quarter, which might be my pick for the most chronically underappreciated video game of all time, but the other two stand on their own.

I've played the odd BoFs, and Dragon Quarter was easily my favorite.

If I ever did a let's play of Dragon Quarter, my prologue would be that the game is essentially an artistic statement about Anarchism: the physical prison of the protagonists is mirrored by the player's prison of crippling difficulty. Neither of you WANT to destroy the world you're operating in (Ryu and Nina by pushing to the surface and the player by resorting to Scenario Overlay) but eventually it's accepted that nobody has any choice if they really want to survive because the rules are set up to make you fail.

Never played Wild Arms 2 (.. damn, there are a LOT of series where I bailed after the first one, come to think of it), Castlevania Chronicles is more interesting than it is fun, and Armored Core isn't Carnage Heart. That said, while FF7 and MML2 slide in by default (and I would have likely voted for them anyhow), I'm going to take Castlevania over Tony Hawk. I appreciate people like Tony Hawk, but those games have always left me completely cold. I at least enjoy playing a mediocre Castlevania.

We need more votes for Castlevania and/or Tony Hawk so they're beating FF7, so we can eliminate FF7 first round.

As much of a Wild ARMs fanboy as I am, I gotta say I found WA2 to be sort of weak. If I had started with that one instead of 3 I don't think I'd have cared to try the rest of the series. It has its good points and it's clever in places (especially the bit about the one rich guy funding both the terrorists and the counter-terrorists in order ensure the world has a group of battle-hardened veterans to defend it from an interdimensional invasion) and an Alter Code F kind of remake could turn it into something great, but overall, I can't quite bring myself to vote for it over the games I haven't played.

Einhander and Brave Fencer Musashi were both on the same demo disc with some kind of bug that would let you play waaaaaay more than you should have been able to.

In the days when I got one game at Christmas and maybe one on my birthday that shit was a mother lode.

Man.
I remember when Square's output was two or three weird RPGs games a year alongside its conventional powerhouses. I miss those times.
But...
Now that I think about it, SqueEnix DID THAT not too long ago with their big gambles on FF13, World of Mana, and Ivalice Alliance.

...
So maybe what I miss is being young?

Einhander, Soul Blade, and Twisted Metal 2 as the three games this round I've actually played. Sorry, other games!

SaGa Frontier is one of my favorite games, despite its many many flaws.

I never finished Star Ocean 2, but it was kinda fun while I was playing it. I recall crafting being a nightmare.
