Tough call.

War Games is all about nerds trying to save the world through hacking, so that's a sure-fire vote right there.

Army of Darkness or Fifth Element? God damn.

Fifth Element is a really well-realized, ridiculous future world, so you think that would take the title, but Army of Darkness is just so beautifully dorky. The herky-jerky animation of the D&D skeleton deadites and the converted killdozer car and absolutely everything about Ash as a character... Army of Darkness it is.

Don't forget a dialogue set that went on to be shamelessly ripped off by a subsequently-nearly-as-famous video game character.

Hackers is the clear Nerdiest Movie in the batch. Throwing a vote at Who Framed Roger Rabbit because nobody but gigantic dorks loved that movie.

After seeing what a technical marvel it is, I almost regret picking Back to the Future over Roger Rabbit

Yeah, that's the thing; if I was hard fucking pressed to name a single favorite movie of all time, Roger Rabbit would probably end up taking it. It's close, but the sheer technical expertise on display, the incredible script, and the GOAT performances just push it above anything else I'd consider. While it might not strictly be a "nerdy" movie in the way Mothra is tilting his votes, it's a fucking marvel for animation nerds, people who love old Hollywood, and being just plain goddamned entertaining.

Not to mention it's one of those movies that is infinitely rewarding on rewatches. I don't think I paid any mind to the fact that the penguin mail carrier coming past the sorcerer's apprentice brooms is riding a real fucking bike and not a cartoon one until a few watches ago, but fuck the way they blend reality with the toons is just. Fucking. Gah, I want to goddamn scream about how we will likely never get a movie as fucking perfect on every single level as WFRR ever again, but it being so singular is a lot of what makes it so perfect.

28. Who Framed Roger Rabbit 7
15. Back to the Future 7
24. Hackers 8
4. They Live 4

I've had some tough tiebreakers in my time. This one was up there.

Back to the Future is just as unique a film as Roger Rabbit in a lot of ways. It's an impossible movie to label; is it a sci-fi flick? An action/comedy? A family film? It's all of that and more. Back to the Future is almost perfect in every way and if you asked me to show a space alien who had never seen a movie a movie, BttF would be in my top 5 picks. Doc, Marty, and Biff will live on forever in our pop culture consciousness the same way that any towering movie icon like Darth Vader will. It's by far the more popular and well known movie for a reason: I can't imagine a person it wouldn't appeal to.

Look at the flowers, Marty. Look at the flowers.

24. Hackers 8
4. They Live 4

Only you can help make this the Guy Ferrari Presents: The Tim Curry Blazin' Hot Curry Collection by voting for Clue and Rocky Horror.

If Clue doesn't move on, well... let's just say there's gonna be a lot of Mister Boddys lying around.

The main takeaway here is that Robert Zemeckis was a fucking genius in the 80s.

So, speaking of Roger Rabbit, have any of you ever heard of "The Thief and The Cobbler"?

It was supposed to be the magnum opus of Richard Williams, the Animation Director for Roger Rabbit (Like Saul Bass, he was also famous for many title card animations in the 60's and 70's, such as for the Pink Panther). Unfortunately it was stuck in Development Hell for 31 years (the all-time record-holder, actually) and was in the end distributed as a hacked-up job after a holding company repo'd the film and sold it to Miramax. Incidentally, it's the last film ever released featuring Kenneth Williams, Anthony Quayle, or Vincent Price.

Luckily, in the early 2000's, using some test footage and recovered footage, some artists have put together what they refer to as the "Recobbled" cut (while it is almost the director's cut, it does save a few small things Miramax's scabs brought in, on the rare occasions they made sense and improved the film, hence not calling it a "Director's Cut"). So you can see it more or less as it was intended now.

It is truly an amazing piece of animation. Here's one part of the end sequence as taken from the Recobbled Cut:

Pretty much saving my breath on a few of these, since we're into a lot of "eh, I won't be TOO sad if that one goes" options here. That being said, it still feels kinda shitty for me to not vote for Tron here on style alone, but the movie just never did much for me since I saw it pretty late.

People got tired of hearing Holy Grail quoted all the time?
