The only problem with actually playing Altered Beast is that you don't gain much over watching an LP of it, other than a certain amount of irritation.

Phantasy Star II is easily as cruel in total as Dragon Quest II, but its cruelty is more evenly distributed throughout the whole experience instead of being sharply concentrated in the final 5%. Looking at some videos now though, it looks and sounds amazing considering it came out like thirteen months after DQIII, and it has a visual style that's clean enough to age well.

Yeah Phantasy Star II is probably the best example of a master-level difficulty RPG that doesn't resort to a bunch of horseshit. As far as I'm aware nothing in the game even has anything like an instant death ability, much less resorts to slinging it at your main character every 5 steps. It's just draconianly balanced and not particularly forgiving, is all. Every obstacle in the game can be overcome with patience and grit.

It's also quite an experience to put it next to IV since the two games practically bookended the system's lifespan. You can see the entire evolution of Genesis games in a blink.

Kind of wondering if we should have declared Phantasy Star an honorary Genesis game and put it in the poll just to complete the trifecta, now.

I'd say 7th Saga is the SNES example of this, but uh, as much as I love that game, and while it is draconianly balanced and very unforgiving, it also involves quite a bit of horseshit. At least you can stock up on anti-instant death items, I guess?

Blood in the Mortal Kombat series was one of the prime reasons to go with Genesis over SNES, so I was really worried when it looked like UMK3 wasn't going to advance.

Ecco and Ecco 2 were fucking gorgeous and extremely innovative in game design (back then not having lives was, like, ultra-avant garde) but Ecco is also real fucking hard and Ecco 2 makes it even worse somehow
