The truly depressing thing about that movie is it describes a better version of what is actually happening. A giant meteor wiping us all out in an instant would at least be something we could face up to. Six months, you get your life in order and you hug your family and your friends and your dog and you go to the beach or you play your video game or watch your favorite movie and then you have your last dinner with the people who mean the most to you in your life and you hold hands and smile and cry as the blast wave vaporizes you. There's a moment or two of searing, complete pain, and then it's over.

This is basically what Seeking A Friend For The End of the World Is. It's also the single most emotionally wrecking movie I've ever watched because of it.

Anyone else remember Melancholia? No?

How about Last Night?

There's a significant difference between this movie and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World/Melancholia/Deep Impact, which makes this movie more depressing, actually.

In this movie, it is 100% technologically and economically feasible for the comet to be averted. But the CEO of not-Apple determines that it's full of strategically important minerals for electronics manufacturing.

Really enjoyed Palm Springs, a romantic comedy set in a time loop.

Don't want to give too much of it away, since it's pretty good to just go in blind, but J.K. Simmons is involved, and the whole movie moves at a great clip. Loved it.

Yeah, Palm Springs is fantastic.

On the other hand, man, I hated Melancholia at the time that I saw it. I don't know if I'd be in any better of a headspace to appreciate it these days or not but I kinda doubt it. Von Trier is just very much not my thing.

deserving censure or condemnation.

correct.

RLM's sequence where they have all the fucking deadbrains (including Kevin Smith) praising it like it's the second coming of christ over footage of Ray getting a ghost blowjob did make me laugh until I cried, though.

Oh man, that reminds me of something I learned the other day.

Apparently William Atherton ended up getting "hey dickless!" etc. yelled at him by randoms on the street for years and years afterward, including at least one occasion where an entire schoolbus full of kids saw him and all yelled it.

An interesting read which is not entirely about movies, but movies do bear the brunt of this phenomenon: Everyone Is Beautiful and No One Is Horny - Modern action and superhero films fetishize the body, even as they desexualize it.

"Everyone MUST be god-tier sexy in media now." has been a thing for a while and we've discussed it at times, but I hadn't even considered the other side of that coin.

Of course relative sexiness of a scene can be subjective, but I didn't find myself shaking my head in disagreement while reading. I'm pretty sure that "Snake Plissken Fucks" is an accurate take.

The funny part is that the biggest disagreement I have with that article is the last paragraph where she compliments Robert Pattinson. Batman is like, the ONE character I would actually expect to simultaneously be ripped as fuck yet radiating the sexual energy of a stack of cardboard. Like, he's actually one of the few cases where that's not only acceptable, but fully in-character and appropriate (and this is not a positive aspect of Batman, it's a core character flaw representing this arrested aspect of his development).

At minimum, Bruce Wayne should be sexy.

But Batman's usually got sexy supervillains hanging off him too. Catwoman and Talia for sure, and there's plenty of precedent for a sexual subtext between him and Joker.

The MCU is weirdly sexless, though. Eternals had a sex scene but it was an exception and you could have dropped it and not really lost anything.

I always liked the slightly comedic effect where Catwoman, Talia, Poison Ivy (not recently, obv), etc. would be doing these soft seduction routines but they'd slide off Batman like he was a stone pillar.

Not that his having a relationship isn't worth exploring, and that's been done well at times. But I do feel the "Batman is sexless because intimacy is vulnerability." trope is also very fertile territory. He's a fantastic character to explore that particular weakness-disguised-as-strength.

As for the MCU, the author claims Disney as a root cause there. Exactly how much of that is directly due to Disney influence is an interesting question, but it's fascinating that even properties like Deadpool end up being pretty chaste in spite of the various sex jokes.

Iron Man 1 and The Incredible Hulk had sex-adjacent scenes (Paramount, pre-Disney) and the maybe-canon-probably-not? Netflix shows were borderline pornographic as Netflix likes to do. So, I do believe the claims that Disney is the cause of the MCU being remarkably asexual.

Batman isn't resisting sex because he has the sexuality of cardboard. He's resisting sex because these woman are criminals, ne'er-do-well and rapscallions! He'd never stoop to giving up his batawang to the criminal element.

The only Batman I think that truly fucks is Batman '66, and that's because the whole world has this sexy, swinger party vibe that makes it seem like the villains and heroes things is just what a bunch of rich, attractive socialites do in their free time.

And yeah, the MCU did have sex in it before Disney. Tony Stark seduced a journalist and Jessica Jones came either close, with the characters getting hot and heavy and Luke Cage used a belt-sander(?) on his chest

Women crave his bat-essence, but he denies it to them.

You can't tell me the 1970s Batman of Denny O'Neil or Steve Englehart didn't give Talia al Ghul or Silver St. Cloud a roll in the hay.
