I have literally never been able to make these work and they infuriate me

Yeah, my eyes aren't physically capable of locking onto the same point enough to even try. Had surgery for it and everything. There's machine vision tools that can extract the shapes these days FWIW.

It's weird that the way I make them work is to cross my eyes, which isn't supposed to work at all.

Crossing your eyes works, but inverts the depth. (Unless it's one that's designed to be viewed by eyecrossing) The way it's supposed to work is the exact opposite of crossing your eyes: focusing behind the image instead of in front.

My first semester of college, my roommate was fucking around with a hex editor (like you do) and changed the header on an audio file so it would read as an image. Then he printed out the image, put it on our door, and told people it was a Magic Eye of a sailboat.

Our nextdoor neighbor, who was a bullshitter, swore that he could see it. Even pointed out where the sail was.
