I love shit like this. We're so conditioned to be used to everything being far too drab. The endless identical silver cars, buildings with little colour or thought to the exterior. I know we have a lot of soul-destroying problems, but I don't understand why western designers have embraced bland soulless design so heartily.

I know the easy answer is "money" but I don't think even that fully explains it.

There are a ton of new buildings in town, and just like all the McDonalds remodels, they're all done in Brutalism style.

Now, I know Brutalism has its admirers. But I absolutely despise it and these new ugly ass buildings are so beyond eyesores as to make me actually make faces whenever I drive by them.

McDonalds remodels

OMG they remodelled ours lately too. It's not just the style - other than a last minute addition of some red panelling, the whole thing is an incredibly fucking ugly combination of coffee brown and wet concrete grey, mostly the latter.

Here's the best pic I could find that's current. That search seemed to show that this design theme is Canada-wide. 1. 2. 3. at least the last one got some bricks.

I can't tell if yours are worse or not. All that grey on ours is REALLY horrible.

What I REALLY noticed from the 1-2 times I was in the new one was how oppressive the INTERIOR space is.

It's dark, both with low lighting and dark coffee-ish walls, and in spite of a mostly-open design, it's somehow claustrophobic with the inside of the outer walls being broken up by stubs of false wall poking in, like you're in the jaws of something. Seriously, it's actively hostile.

Of course if the intention was to keep kids from lingering inside, that obviously wasn't working, since the second (?) time I was inside like 3-4 months back, some kids were hotboxing their booth with masks off (oh goody).

Not that I go to McDonald's more than 1-2 times a year anyway, but I sure as hell ain't been back since that.

Hmm, I'd say they're about equally bad imo opinion. I haven't actually been inside one of mine yet, since I quit all fast food that isn't In N Out or "fuck, I want a McFlurry, guess I'll go through the drive through" so I can't comment on the interior design. Yours sounds horrible in that "industrial Chipotle awful" style.

I don't know who the fuck is in charge of the new redesigns at McD corporate, but goddamn I miss the old red tops. Like a lot of kids, I have good memories of going to these places and honestly it would have been nice if someone didn't decide to just make them look and feel as horrible as possible.

They even repainted the fence on yours to be more depressing. It's incredible.

No no, I mean the low metal fence just behind the bus stop. If you switch between 2019 and 2021 on google street view, it goes from painted white to painted slate grey.

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday, 13 September 2007, by a majority of 144 states in favour, 4 votes against (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States) and 11 abstentions (Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burundi, Colombia, Georgia, Kenya, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Samoa and Ukraine)

Years later the four countries that voted against have reversed their position and now support the UN Declaration.

So they all reversed, but I think that club of four that voted No is pretty fuckin' lulzy.

Yeah, at the time (2007) the US and Australia were obvious gimmes. Like, I'd have been surprised to find out either of them voted yes. Canada is obvious now. NZ does have a long history of treating the Maori like second class citizens (or worse) though. I read that it was like, last week when finally for the first time a Maori person (woman) with a chin tattoo was allowed to read the news.

Yeah, I mean, NZ's not there yet, but at the same time, the Maori have had more direct access and input to the NZ political system in recent decades (and throughout the 20th century, though at the same time that's a low bar) than any indigenous peoples in the other three countries.
