little known fact that Balto is a KSer and a glory hog, another sled dog named Togo ran the by far longer leg. (260 miles to Balto's 55.) Balto just ran the last one.

So I just watched Togo, starring Willem Dafoe. It was pretty good! The dog playing Togo was actually played by Diesel, who is of Togo's line 14 generations down. The filthy KSer Balto shows up at the end and gets his picture taken because the other lead dog in Balto's team was named "Fox" and the reporter thought that he couldn't use that name because people would think it was a real fox. Or possibly a very sexy FBI agent.

Overall it has a lot of Togo puppy shenanigans (in flashbacks) and is a solid 7/10 movie.

Yes I will use any excuse to post in this thread because it is my favorite thread

Balto is like... okay it's Balto. Yeah. You know, in the same way that Air Bud is Air Bud.

But I always liked this one little tiny scene (the first 1:22 here). Something about the narration just hits perfectly.

Your post reminded me of that and how I was never able to find any information about what hardships, if any, the train and its crew ran into on that run to Nenana. Obviously nothing like the mushers faced, but the Alaska Railroad was fairly recent and that line had only been completed two years prior - even with how established rail technology was at that point, it can't have been easy in the conditions and circumstances at the time, just another group of people who did their best and thought nothing noteworthy of it.

I guess that's part of why the Serum Run is so memorable; in spite of Kaasen hogging the spotlight post-facto (with a dog that may never even have been part of the run), it was an event of almost pure selflessness AND tightly coordinated work by a very large number of people. One of those rare occasions where there was no bullshit, no malice, just everyone cooperating to get something entirely noble done before time ran out. There was some argument about shipping the serum by air (very risky at the time, though bush pilots would be the norm across the north only a decade later), but even that ended up being settled amicably in the end. Maybe I feel like the narrative conversation in that one tiny segment reflects this sentiment.

Plus dogs. Selflessness AND puppers, how much better a story can you get than that?

yeah the disney movie aside, the actual events of "Balto" are pretty damn compelling and interesting.

also, did you know Balto has two direct to video sequels? I didn't until 2 days ago and now I feel this overwhelming urge to watch them and review them here in this thread

Namely Balto was produced by Amblimation, the very short-lived studio that did Feivel Goes West, then We're Back!, then Balto

We're Back was intentionally rushed to release at the same time as Jurassic Park, in hopes that it would be seen as a family-friendly alternative
Then Balto just happened to release at the same time as an obscure, quickly-forgotten film called Toy Story

so yeah anyway Amblimation folded pretty damn fast
