Re: Game musings and news
So... wait... is Elden Ring actually just another souls game???
(I'm not asking because of the cheeky ending above, but because the footage I've seen looks like Souls style combat - and atmosphere)
Re: Game musings and news
I once described Dark Souls to friends who'd avoided it as "if Skyrim were Soul Calibur"
Elden Ring is "if Dark Souls were Skyrim"
Elden Ring is "if Dark Souls were Skyrim"
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Your post here suggests to me that you may not be aware that Elden Ring is the latest game by From Soft (which is specified in the video), who are the creators of Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Sekiro, etc., (which is not as obvious). It is very much "Dark Souls + open world navigated by horse".

Oh yeah, I didn't know the publisher name offhand.
I was only half paying attention to all the Elden Ring hype so, yeah, I didn't realize it was just another Souls game.

Yep. Preliminary reports suggest that it's not as punishing as Sekiro, but boss fights (especially the one right at the start) are still extremely difficult. However, the open world makes it easier than ever to just wander elsewhere to get more equipment/spells/etc. On the downside, the extremely open design means that character quests can be easier to miss than ever: this really seems to be the sort of game that rewards having a dedicated discussion group to check in with periodically as you share stories about your progress and info about the world.

Re: Game musings and news
Konami isn't really Konami anymore, but over the past couple years it's at least done a pretty solid job of rereleasing its back catalogue. This would appear to be no exception.
I'd love to have seen some more weird apocrypha in there -- like the Amiga and DOS ports of the original NES game (maybe include a disclaimer on the US version of the DOS game explaining that it's impossible to complete, and also include the European version which fixes the impossible jump) -- but I understand why that's more complicated than focusing on platforms they've already got emulators for (NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Genesis, all of which are represented in past Contra and Castlevania collections). It's a minor gripe; this looks like a good, thorough collection.

Bloody NES Turtles. Only turtles worthwhile were sword/staff. Sai one was useless.

Re: Game musings and news
NES TMNT was very much Donatello and the Damage Decoys, but Mikey actually had the shittiest power-range. The sais were short range but IIRC correctly outdamaged the katanas.
Re: Game musings and news
Michelangelo is the only one who can't hit an enemy who's a tile above him, but I thought he had better forward range than Raphael.
And of course Donatello, while overall the best character, has range problems of his own. His horizontal attack has a very narrow vertical hitbox, and vice-versa. He's vulnerable to enemies like Mousers that can walk right under his bo, or jumping/flying enemies that move in an arc pattern.
The game's a mess in a lot of ways but it's interesting how they tried to balance the four characters even if they didn't really succeed at it. There are good ideas there! They just didn't quite pan out. Which kinda summarizes the game in a nutshell.
(In the arcade game IIRC they all play the same except Raphael has a different special from the other three.)

I'ma go with pretty goddamn high.
Bob at RetroRGB: "Poorly emulated, badly scaled, cash-grab re-releases like this are borderline scams and take money out of everyone’s pocket."
Oof. Being right sucks.

these are certainly... some options

Square-Enix sells all of its Western game studios—and their games—to Embracer
First thought: Good. I still get confused when I see "Square-Enix sale" and it's a bunch of Tomb Raider games.
Second thought: Wait, Embracer is THQ Nordic? Fuck.

What's the bad angle there? Is it just that THQ Nordic makes trashy low-rent games, or is there something worse going on I haven't heard about?

Re: Game musings and news
if there's one thing squeenix likes, it's selling off all western studios and IPs to fund its blockchain and play-to-earn R&D.
if there's two things thq nordic likes it's being nazis and being pedophiles.

Their "I do not condone child pornography, white supremacy, or racism in any shape or form" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by their shirt.
The story's three years old, but a quick look at LinkedIn shows that both people named in it still have jobs at THQ Nordic with "director" in the title.
