I worked for a frozen pizza manufacturer for a short while. The pepperoni slicer was literally long pepperoni sausages slid into a bed of holes and slid back and forth over blades to drop the slices onto the pizzas. So there were like 50 pepperonis standing up sticking out like giant dongs and whipping back and forth as the table moved to slice them. Fucking pornographic.

[Tolkien discussion]

<Starshine (she/they)> i do disagree about the misogyny heavily informing the text tho, unless you mean the absence of many women then yeah 100% but the women characters we do get, with the exception of arwen who was a late addition are full bodied characters with agency which is rare even today with a lot of writers

<Starshine (she/they)> (Tho he was sexist he was after all british and born in the 19th century)

<Materialist G> Tolkien is one of the rare people I do think deserves a bit of "by the standards of his time" credit. There's a lot of stuff in there which I am uncomfortable seeing regurgitated verbatim but I think is not terrible in context.

<Starshine (she/they)> Yeah like Tolkien used a slur for the Roma in a letter replying to the nazis but the context is them demanding to know if hes got aryan blood for a translation and him mentioning his ancestors weren’t aryans and *included* roma. Its a giant fuck you to their blood science, and he didnt pursue the translation.

<Stephen Judkins> I do not think it was considered a slur at the time, there was probably no other exonym anyone would recognize. Not saying it wasn't good that it was changed! And he's not disparaging the group either

<post malone ergo propter malone> he's being pedantic about language families in an admirably snotty letter to the literal Nazis, i hope we retain sufficient context to cut a little slack here

<post malone ergo propter malone> like i am 100% confident we can find much worse things JRR said and did to build a case around than what is at worst a touch foul that wasn't a touch foul at the time. if i were zombie Tolkien and I emerged i would be apoplectic to find that I had been cancelled for *that* one. just complete undead rage.

<Starshine (she/they)> there’s a real dearth of quality writing on the topic of him wrt racism/sexism. either suffering from unfamiliarity with his work, social sciences, or historical context

<Starshine (she/they)> [joker voice] middle-earth deserves a better class of critic!

<post malone ergo propter malone> problematic racial attitudes related to Northern Europe (laudatory):

<post malone ergo propter malone> Image

<JM> Personal grudge against Hitler because Hitler ruined the vikings for everybody else is really something.

<post malone ergo propter malone> i mean he's not *wrong*

<JM> It's funny because you could 100% find people with this same grudge *right now* so it feels almost comically contemporary. Like Tolkien grumbling on Reddit that all the cool tattoos are actually nazi shit, and he can't find anything cool other than the Bluetooth logo.

<Joe Hiccups> Compare LotR to Asimov's Foundation. At least Tolkien has some women in the story. Jackson still (correctly) increased their roles where he could, but at least there was something there to work with.

<Starshine (she/they)> there’s a lot more in the Silmarillion. melian, varda, luthien, Aredhel, igwig, idril, elwing, Aerin, Nerdanel, nienna, Míriel, andreth (one of my faves), haleth to name just a few

<Juicy Gay Steak> i remember the one quote that there's more named horses than women in lotr lmfao

<JonLK> Not counting the appendices, there's Eowyn, Galadriel, Arwen, Rosie Cotton, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins...uh...is Elrond's wife's name given at any point? I think that might be it.

<Joe Hiccups> Goldberry

<JonLK> Ah, right, of course.

<JonLK> I guess there's Lúthien and Elbereth and Queen Beruthiel and some other women who get mentioned as having existed in the past, but who aren't characters in the narrative. Shelob is female, at least.

<post malone ergo propter malone> Shelob feels very much like cheating.

<First Wordle Problems> Oh I see you’re just going to deny Shelob her womanhood.

<post malone ergo propter malone> i'm just saying, gender hits different for giant spider/spirits

<Ed> i've seen the internet, you're wrong

<Kermng> Wow so we’re really going to criticize a single mother trying to make it on her own???

<post malone ergo propter malone> IT DOESNT COUNT IF YOU ATE THE FATHER

<Sara (Dire Sloth)> What if you were hungry?

I still wish Jackson had kept Arwen leading the elves at Helm's Deep in the second film. What could be more romantic than two people in love defending a fortress together against an unstoppable tide of thousands upon thousands of orcish super-soldiers?
