I got a new Sakizo artbook in today, and it has a little something for Friday, too.

Does this count as both monstergirl and goth girl?

Sorry for finger, the book is pretty tightly bound and doesn't hold open easily.

Amazing.

And not just in a "Friday fetish" way, the art is legit great.

Because 52! is 8.0658175e+67.

So 80,658,175,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different ways to arrange a deck of cards or so.

*shuffles a deck of cards, somehow ending up with every suit grouped together and ordered 2-A*
Well, glad to get that one out of the way for the universe.
*shuffles again, gets the random shuffle with all the 2s together, then all the 3s, up through all the aces at the top of the deck*
Well, glad to get that one out of the way...

Some additional fun facts about the deck of cards thing:

1. Imagine you were to pick up a grain of sand, and mark it somehow so you'd know it again if you examined it, and then handed it to someone to hide anywhere on earth (at random) on any sandy beach or desert. Then, you started shuffling cards. Each time you completed a shuffle, you marked down the configuration, looking for any match with any previous configuration. You did this (somehow) one time per second. At the same time, again once per second, you picked up a grain of sand and looked for your grain. If you did this, shuffling and checking the deck once per second, and examining one grain of sand per second, for the rest of your natural life, you'd be (way, way, waaaay) more likely to find your grain of sand again.

2. The exact same is true of this scenario: If you did the grain of sand thing again, but this time instead took a random atom, and then took a random proton in that atom and marked it, and then told another person to hide it on or in earth... like, anywhere on or in earth, all the way down to the core of the planet... and then started the "check one proton every second while shuffling and looking for a match" thing, you'd still be waaaay more likely to find your proton again than to find a match in the deck of cards before you died.

Because again, 52! is 8.0658175e+67, or 8×10^67, and the number of Protons that make up the planet Earth is roughly 3.6x10^51.

So

8×10^67
vs
3.6x10^51

Which means that the number of possible configurations of a deck of cards is about 16 digits longer than the number of protons that make up Earth.

Of course, practically you'd neither find your proton/grain OR make a match before you died. But it still holds true that you're insanely more likely to find your grain/proton again before you get a match in the deck.

"Extreme circumstances" seems like it's implying that it's along the same lines for why people would sometimes turn a blind eye to gay relationships at sea or in the army in otherwise generally homophobic societies, like, "Oh well there's no women around, so fine, I guess so." obviously this was not consistent and could vary by era, country, culture, the officer in charge, how much the rank and file covered for each other, and so on.

This video being British* meant that this narrator probably had that country's long and extensive history of, uh, naval traditions in mind.

*Might possibly be Aussie (see the watermark, and also the accent is potentially Aussie), but Aussies had virtually no domestic media at all until like, the 70's - not even kidding - so it would still likely be British in origin.

Well, think back. Were you a big gay bitch before PG&E burned down your hometown...? Makes you think, huh?
(No.)
