anyway in other news i finally found some definitive information about the whole "Han Solo says stupid shit about parsecs and Kenobi reacts" deal

so i remember having a conversation years ago in #finalfight about how Han bullshitting about how fast his ship was was maybe not a slip up by Lucas and was intentionally meant to be bullshit because that's Han's whole deal

some theories were put forth, I remember someone saying that it was possible that Lucas didn't know that parsec was a measure of distance and not time and Kenobi's reaction was just Alec Guinness (who was pretty damn well educated and may have well known on his own what a parsec was) ad libbing his reaction.

But nope! Turns out that at least by the 4th draft, it was intentionally bullshit.

In the initial film, Solo brags that the Falcon "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs".[b] As the parsec is a unit of distance, not time, different explanations have been provided. In the fourth draft of the script, Kenobi "reacts to Solo's stupid attempt to impress them with obvious misinformation."[27]

So that's finally one mystery solved. Turns out Lucas was smarter than we gave him credit for.
