This is a sketch in the Civil War diary of union captain Eben W. Fiske. Virginia was a stray adopted by his unit and he recorded that she "regularly purred herself to sleep inside my arm.”

It's funny because the concept (they're always guilty and get caught) is exactly Columbo. The audience knows who did the murder and even how, it's not a who dunnit, it's a how-catch-em.
