This was a pretty obvious choice once it occurred to me, though I don't expect I'll be keeping this one for a decade seeing as every time I look at it I get Jaga's theme stuck in my head for four hours.

Both. I just put a picture of my own face through portraitai.com (back when you could use it on desktop), so it's a composite of innumerable historical portraits and also someone in particular.

Ironically, I remember Ellis commenting (in a blog post or interview or something) that he'd chosen never to meet Hunter S Thompson because he suspected that if he got to know him, he wouldn't like him anymore.

I missed a chance to meet Ellis back in '06 or '07; he was signing at Atomic Comics in Mesa, and there was a monsoon that day so not many people showed up and he left early and was gone by the time I got there. I've been disappointed about that ever since. At least now I know all I missed out on was another memory to file in the same section of my brain as meeting Al Franken, Brian Wood, and Richard Stallman.

It's not terribly surprising that Warren Ellis turned out to be a Warren Ellis protagonist. I saw the headlines and thought, "Well, that sucks," but I also thought, "Yeah, that checks out." You don't have to be a charismatic, manipulative, twisted bastard to make a living writing about charismatic, manipulative, twisted bastards, but it probably helps.

Yeah, it kinda makes me think about what Joxam said about Louis CK, along the lines of "How could anyone be surprised by this? If you listened to what he was actually saying, it was all about what a sick weirdo he was."

Ellis's "apology" is even pretty much the same as CK's, beat for beat. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize how influential and admired I was..."
