Man, I thought this was an actual musical recommendation.
Re: Avatars
Gustave Courbet's The Desperate Man makes me think Büge's signature is part of a sequence in which one random 17th century guy is stalked by portrait artists and gradually loses his mind.

Re: Avatars
Well you see back before it got popular I was dressing like a fascist cop but, you know, ironically, but then of course the normies got ahold of it and they completely missed the point and ruined it but that's fine, they can have it, because now I'm into retro mid-90s furrydom. You ever heard of Minerva the Mink?
Re: Avatars
...yeah so what with the several dozen women coming forward with stories of Warren Ellis being a creep, I'ma go ahead and retire the Warren Ellis avatar. Replacement TBD.

Huh. I mean, I was gonna get rid of my Transmetropolitan collection anyway (A journalist winning against police corruption and taking down a US president? Who'd believe that?), but this is just extra incentive.

Re: Avatars
Say that reminds me.
Hey Zed, which painting is your avatar from? I feel like I should recognize the subject, but it actually does not come up on a google image search at all.
Is it just one of the innumerable historical "picture of a young man" sort of portraits, or is it someone in particular?

Probably more like 10 or 11. Ignition City came out in '09.
This was a pretty obvious choice once it occurred to me, though I don't expect I'll be keeping this one for a decade seeing as every time I look at it I get Jaga's theme stuck in my head for four hours.

Both. I just put a picture of my own face through portraitai.com (back when you could use it on desktop), so it's a composite of innumerable historical portraits and also someone in particular.

Ironically, I remember Ellis commenting (in a blog post or interview or something) that he'd chosen never to meet Hunter S Thompson because he suspected that if he got to know him, he wouldn't like him anymore.
I missed a chance to meet Ellis back in '06 or '07; he was signing at Atomic Comics in Mesa, and there was a monsoon that day so not many people showed up and he left early and was gone by the time I got there. I've been disappointed about that ever since. At least now I know all I missed out on was another memory to file in the same section of my brain as meeting Al Franken, Brian Wood, and Richard Stallman.
It's not terribly surprising that Warren Ellis turned out to be a Warren Ellis protagonist. I saw the headlines and thought, "Well, that sucks," but I also thought, "Yeah, that checks out." You don't have to be a charismatic, manipulative, twisted bastard to make a living writing about charismatic, manipulative, twisted bastards, but it probably helps.
Re: Avatars
when "gnarled old dude hooks up with young attractive female assistant" features so prominently in so much of someone's corpus, the pattern does become clear in hindsight.
Re: Avatars
I should really just follow the personal works of the female assistants from now on, maintaining all this death-of-the-author is getting exhausting.

Yeah, it kinda makes me think about what Joxam said about Louis CK, along the lines of "How could anyone be surprised by this? If you listened to what he was actually saying, it was all about what a sick weirdo he was."
Ellis's "apology" is even pretty much the same as CK's, beat for beat. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize how influential and admired I was..."
