Dirty Santa 2020: Giving Back

Postby Lyrai » Sun Nov 29, 2020 5:56 pm

There will be no normal dirty santa this year. We are too drained, too tired, too weary, and I'm told people simply don't have shit.

But I still want to do something.

In lieu of a physical gift exchange this year, I'm giving to a local animal shelter, and a food bank. I can't volunteer because of covid, but I can donate money and goods to them. I would like to encourage people to donate to charities as well

https://www.charitywatch.org/top-rated-charities Is a good starter. If you have a preferred charity you will vouch for being legit, post it here.

Happy Holidays, everyone. If enough people _still_ want to do a gift exchange, I dcan arrange something digital over Steam maybe, but I would prefer to wait until 2021 for Dirty Santa to fully resume.

Boring yet relevant note for the U.S. audience:

On your income tax returns for 2020 (and only 2020, unless the law changes again), you'll be able to deduct up to $300 of charitable donations without itemizing, still taking the standard deduction. Save those receipts!

You mean you take the standard deduction and then itemize donations?

It adds on to the standard deduction. Full-on itemized deductions are the same form as ever.

I'm in. I'll donate in the spirit of Brontos to two of our local homeless shelters, one focuses on youths age 10-20 and the other on adults.

Man, just as I was going through junk I thought I could gift away. Ah well, this [redacted] has been sitting in my closet for several years, so what's one more? And I've been meaning to put my COVID stimulus check to better use, anyway.

I'm at a loss for how to bring it up and not sound like a dick or derail the thread, but I'm a newly one-income household and will be struggling for years to come. I could use some continued support myself.

While we're at it, does anyone know any good toy drives? Some troubles with gift donations at my son's school has me thinking I should try and do some more to help.

- Toys for Tots is the first that comes to mind, but I haven't looked into it yet. The connection to the military also makes me skin crawl reflexively.
- Operation Santa Claus came up when I searched for Santa Ana, too.
