The Antisocial Network
Re: The Antisocial Network
The best thing about these events is that each one inspires another round of decentralising social networking, the latest attempts focusing on a combination of IPFS and blockchain. It hasn't landed so far, but re-rolling the dice seems good. Anyone here have a horse in that race?
Re: The Antisocial Network
I don't have a horse in the race, although I do have a fantasy of a horse: "What if mastodon but it was livejournal?"
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.
Re: The Antisocial Network
As I understand it, Discord has been making a credible effort to not be a part of all this crap. (As well they should, if their chosen name is a nod to anything from the 70s.) https://www.polygon.com/2018/2/28/17061 ... e-movement
I looked into this when I saw they'd booted someone I've already spent too many words on here, after he doxxed one of his own customers for disloyal opinions.

Facebook developed a VPN for iphones that spied on the people that used it.
Apple banned it off the app store, so Facebook just started paying kids to install it from a third party website.
Today, Apple revoked Facebook's enterprise certificate.

As predicted, Google's enterprise cert has now been revoked as well.

Re: The Antisocial Network
Collectively, the employees described a workplace that is perpetually teetering on the brink of chaos. It is an environment where workers cope by telling dark jokes about committing suicide, then smoke weed during breaks to numb their emotions. It’s a place where employees can be fired for making just a few errors a week — and where those who remain live in fear of the former colleagues who return seeking vengeance.
It’s a place where, in stark contrast to the perks lavished on Facebook employees, team leaders micromanage content moderators’ every bathroom and prayer break; where employees, desperate for a dopamine rush amid the misery, have been found having sex inside stairwells and a room reserved for lactating mothers; where people develop severe anxiety while still in training, and continue to struggle with trauma symptoms long after they leave; and where the counselling that Cognizant offers them ends the moment they quit — or are simply let go.

I'm still digesting that one. It's... pretty harrowing.
Among other things, I wonder what they hope to accomplish by having such an austere work environment. Regulating snuff films and child porn is bad enough, but also making it a pressure cooker of micromanagement? Are they trying to drive people insane?
I mean, how far are we from finding a Facebook server farm powered by an Omelas-style orphan?

If there is one thing that I have learned about human beings its that they are absolutely terrible at managing other human beings. They seem to consistently do the exact wrong thing at all times.

Re: The Antisocial Network
The end result of Tumblr's brilliant decision to ban porn?
One fifth of users have deserted the site and traffic is way down.
Maybe next time, someone will remember their money being vaporized?
It's not like we can depend on shareholding decision makers to be incentivized by anything but their wallets, since it appears that even "people like porn" was too difficult for these troglodytes to understand.

Longread at Weird: 15 Months of Fresh Hell Inside Facebook
The intro is a little flowery, but the article is extensively researched (apparently they interviewed 65 people).
Wait, this isn't Weird.
Why, there's no magazine called Weird, is there?

Business Insider Twitter reportedly won't use an algorithm to crack down on white supremacists because a number of GOP politicians could get swept up in the banwave
Note that a spokeperson for twitter does deny this. That said, I have to imagine that any other form of official response would be unthinkable to Twitter.

Thing is those would not actually be false positives.
Re: The Antisocial Network
I'm thinking that 'number of politicians' could be one and it would still present a bit of a problem for them.

Exactly.
Re: The Antisocial Network
Wordpress owner Automattic is buying Tumblr. No plans to lift the porn ban.
I don't know what the fuck that's going to mean in real life, but merging some Tumblr features into Wordpress seems like it could have some benefits. Even if the frontend implementation isn't included.
As for Tumblr's underlying technology, [Automattic CEO Matt] Mullenweg wrote that "there are some good opportunities to standardize on the Open Source WordPress tech stack, but the front-end user experience on Tumblr will evolve on its own path."

The funny part is that Tumblr went for a cool $3 million. Remember, Yahoo bought it for over a billion.
In Silicon Valley, $3 million will get you Tumblr or a mid-sized house.
