Of COURSE it's in Oakville.

EDIT: Oh it's for Ukranians. I can see how someone wangled it to get it put up then... doesn't mean it should have been. SS is SS and that division was definitely on record as particiapating in war crimes. It's still a fucking Nazi War Memorial.

Well, they backtracked at least

But after researchers pointed out on social media that the monument honours the 14th Waffen SS and this newspaper published an article Friday detailing the history of the controversial unit, Halton Regional Police issued a clarification. “The initial information collected by investigators indicated that the graffiti may have been hate-motivated, targeting the identifiable group of Ukrainians in general, or Ukrainian members of this cultural centre,” the police said in a statement. “At no time did the Halton Regional Police Service consider that the identifiable group targeted by the graffiti was Nazis.”

Halton Regional Police Chief Stephen Tanner went further on Twitter, questioning the reason for the monument. “The most unfortunate part of all this is that any such monument would exist in the first place,” he tweeted.

YA THINK?!

For the record, Canada was pretty bad about letting ex-Nazis escape here.

So the Conservatives have elected a new party leader, and it's Erin O'Toole, a man who chose Ontario Proud's founder to be his campaign manager.

He's also a year younger than Justin Trudeau but looks at least a decade older.

I mean, it seems pretty common for people so filled with hate and anger to age way faster. The problem is that the hate keeps them alive for way longer than they deserve.

Tories throwing votes away is fine by me! This is like watching the Ontario Tories elect Tim Hudak as leader for the third time in a row.

Dougie has just announced he won't campaign for the federal Conservatives in the next federal election.

It's pretty funny how last time they kept him out, but now that they want him he's letting them hang. We'll see if this sticks, but oh what poetry.

I think that "The founder of your nation" is something that, however much its a gross oversimplification of the historical narrative, gets folks in the gut. That's part of the mythological bedrock of the modern nation-state. MacDonald was a bit of an atypical case, because he was recognized as deeply flawed even by whites - a drunken, lying, corrupt wheeler-dealer, is no hagiographic portrait.

But it's still easy to make a charming conman into a hero. A genocidal murderer of cultures and peoples? That's a little more difficult.

Which is to say there was a time when this would have bothered me more, but I understand and approve of this now. What MacDonald once was to me, is not who he is to me now, and not who he has ever been to thousands and thousands of other people. If tearing down a statue of a long-dead leader brings some small measure of relief to so many living people who are suffering, right now, then yeah, hand me a rope and let's pull that fucker down.

I will say that did like the proposed idea of putting the statue in a museum, only in its current state. I like the story an exhibit like that would tell.

There's some schmo in the replies going

"However satisfying this may have been, what are we left with after it is gone?
A blank space, devoid of meaning."

and all I'm imagining is the most pedantic elf in Middle-Earth looking at the ruins of Barad-dûr a couple weeks after the ring is destroyed.

The BC Supreme Court just ruled against the most serious legal challenge the Canadian medicare system has faced to date, on all points of the case and extremely strongly so

I hear it's not particularly fashionable to martyr yourself for the rich at the moment, especially in favour of two-tier healthcare. But like the proverbial monkey with his hand on a peanut in a jar, he wouldn't be the last who'd chosen greed as his hill to die on.

The asshole plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, of course, but the strength of this ruling are going to weigh pretty heavily against that.

Burlington idiot busted after years of falsely claiming to be an executioner for ISIS

I like how the article hints at the very real possibility that it all began because of an instagram shitposting fight.

It's been fifty years since the FLQ kidnapped the deputy premier of Quebec and Pierre Trudeau invoked martial law.

Police in Quebec City are hunting for a man dressed in medieval clothing and armed with a bladed weapon who has left “multiple victims.”

They say it happened near the national assembly.

Police are asking those in the area to stay indoors.

There’s no word on how many people were hurt or the severity of their injuries.

The article doesn't say he's white, but...
